This small print depicts an ornamental pattern composed of curled acanthus leaves and spiralling vines terminating in flowers or buds. The plant ornament forms a symmetrical pattern around a central motif inscribed with the initials "HSB," which are conjoined. This motif is framed by two horn-shaped containers that end in monsters' heads.

Console with bird in vine scroll, rinceau, and angel

Physical Description

A three-quarter length angel, robustly carved in high relief, emerges from a cloud bank on the curved inner face of the console. The outer face of the console bears a tightly wound vine scroll carved in shallower relief with a bird at its center. The bird grasps the vine with its left leg while stretching back to grasp a cluster of grapes in its beak.

Title

Tankard with Lid and scenes of Judith, Lucretia, and Venus

Physical Description

The body of the tankard is decorated with two narrow bands of gilded abstract vegetal ornament around the neck and base, separated by a wider band that features three repoussé medallions alternating with three bosses. Each medallion depicts a standing nude female: one of the nudes appears in an interior holding a dagger to her chest; another holds a sword and a man's head and stands beside a female companion; the third holds an elongated arrow with a blindfolded cupid at her feet. The cast handle consists of a clawed bird's foot grasping a ball at the base, followed by a satyr mask, a bound female nude, and, surmounting the handle, the bust of a warrior. The lid, a later addition, bears a wreath with a series of initials and the date 1639.

Engaged capital with vine rinceau, palmette leaves, and rosettes

Physical Description

Engaged capital carved in grayish, coarse sandstone (arkose). The bell-shaped drum is decorated with a pattern of vine rinceau that encircles palmette leaves in a roughly symmetrical arrangement on each face of the capital. These ornamental plant forms are deeply undercut to highlight the pattern in sharp relief. A pair of volutes decorated with vertical striations springs from the vine rinceau in the upper portion of each face of the capital. A rosette enclosed in a circle appears at the top edge of the center of each face of the capital, above the point where the branches of the volutes diverge.

Physical Description

A bearded man with a halo and wearing ecclesiastical vestments appears rapt in ecstasy in the upper third of this painting. He stands on a cloud beneath an elaborate baldachin with his eyes turned upward. A stag with a cross between its antlers lies at his feet on the figure's right while a putto sits at his left. Two more putti hover to the left and right of the man, holding a red curtain behind him. This scene is surrounded on three sides by dense painted decoration composed primarily of vegetal motifs, which is complemented by the exuberant scrolling foliage and fish scale patterns of the gilded frame. A cartouche bearing a Latin inscription identifying the standing figure is located near the bottom of the painted surface.

This maiolica dish is covered by a radial pattern consisting of abstract leaves and curling tendrils punctuated with flowers all centered around a yellow disk in the center of the well. The harmony of the design stems from radial symmetry of the pattern as well as the restricted palette of blue and a soft brass-yellow.

Capital from the palace-city of Medinat al-Zahara with stylized acanthus leaves, vine rinceau and fleurons

Physical Description

This capital, based upon the Roman composite order, features stylized acanthus leaves and rinceau on the bell of the capital, which terminates in a band of bead-and-reel motif on the astragal. This, in turn, is capped by an echinus decorated with three fleurons and vine rinceau on each face as well as four projecting volutes also decorated with rinceau and fleurons. Originally the bell of the capital had two tiers of acanthus leaves, but the capital has been cropped below the top of the first tier and the tips of the leaves, which once curved outward from the surface of the capital, have been sheared off.

Physical Description

This cup is fashioned from a coconut shell set in a shallow bowl supported on a long, narrow stem and held in place by three straps and a tall neck band. The shallow domed lid has a plain, overhanging rim and terminates in a finial with a statuette of a nude sea nymph and serpent. The metalwork is densely decorated with various masks, animals, fantastic creatures, and vegetal ornament.
