Studies of Nine Male Helmeted Heads and a Man Smoking with a Devil |
George Cruikshank |
A study sketch of the heads of men along the top right side and a pair - a man and the devil - smoking in the bottom left corner. The men on the right are all helmeted in different syles of helmet with pointed faces. The man in the bottom corner is dressed in 17th century dress and reclining with legs outward while smoking. The devil figure is hard to discern, but appears to be a standing gargoyle-like figure in the distance. Clouds of smoke surround them. |

A Scene with a Pair of Lovers and Children Playing by the Waterside |
William Etty |
A light sketch drawing of a scene full of activity. Towards the center of the piece is a pair of lovers in embrace. All around them are nude figures, identified as children, playing by the water. Some are fishing, others are in a boat, and the remainder are either swimming of reclining by the water's side. Below these figures is a study drawing of a person's profile angled to the left, while above the scene is a more detailed study drawing of a young boy's head. |

Procession |
William Etty |
A light sketch of a large procession of men and animals walking from the right to the left of the scene. The first few men walking are holding instruments and playing while walking. As the scene continutes, men and beast walk together; some of the animals seen are a boar, a ram, dogs and an elephant outfitted with a decorative covering and carrying a large vessel. In the background a building with columns sits on a tree-crovered hilly landscape. |

Sketch of Two Scenes with Male Figures |
Jean Louis Forain |
This sheet contains sketches for two different unidentified scenes. The upper scene depicts a square-jawed, mustachioed man standing in front of a railing or counter. Two figures, suggested only by their contours, lean upon the rail or counter from the other side. Between them appears an unidentified object. The lower scene represents two men standing on a platform. The nearer figure, wearing shorts, bends forward to lift something. Another, larger objects sits in front of him. Behind him stands a figure in a long coat. This second figure seems to address the heads of an audience behind and below the platform. |

A Woman in an Evening Dress, Singing |
Constantin Guys |
A sketch drawing of a woman in an evening dress. Her face and mouth are drawn in a way to show the action of singing as the title suggests. In her right hand she is holding her gown; she is leaning forward that might suggest she is moving while singing, as one would in a performance. |

Early Stage of Proposal for General Mills Commission (Egyptian Beauty) |
Jene Highstein |
Heavily worked and reworked pencil drawing on large square of grid paper. Form is an ovoid shape with longitudinal and lateral lines, thinner than it is tall, fit into a rectangular box that represents the block of stone to be carved. At the bottom right of the sketched image, Highstein has noted the dimensions (7’ x 7’ x 2’) x 7. Seven blocks of granite at 2’ x 2’ x 7’ were meant to be stacked and carved into the proposed shape. |
