Standing Buddha in Abhaya-vara mudra

Artist Unknown, Korea

Gilt bronze standing Buddha on lotus pedestal. He is clothed in monastic robes with cascading U-shaped folds, similar to the gentle folds of his neck. His hands ake the form of two mudras: the abhaya (“have no fear”) mudra with the right hand, and varada (“wishes are granted”) mudra with the left.

It is well proportioned overall and represent Buddha in a standing position; a position quite popular in Unified Shilla Buddhist sculpture. The Ushinisha on the top of Buddha's head is tall, voluminous and black. The face is plump and facial features, including the eyes, nose and the mouth, are all rather small. The earlobes hang are hanging and the three curved lines on the neck are highly distinct.

Buddha, standing, in vitarka mudra

Artist Unknown, China

A small, solid gilt bronze image of the Budddha, shown standing in a slighly swayback pose with both right and left hands in vitarka mudra, the gesture ot teaching. His robe is draped over both shoulders and falls in large, symmentrical V-shaped folds in shallow relief over his torso. His head is small, with the canonical snail-shell curls suggested by tiny knobs of bronze. He has full cheeks, a well-defined mouth, and incised slits for his eyes. There are two incised rings at his neck (instead of the canonical three). He stands on a pedestal of upward, double-petal lotus petals, raised on a hollow base. Mountain village among pines and white clouds

Artist Unknown, China

This fan painting shows a mountain village teeming with activity. The peaceful scene provides a glimpse at daily life, depicting villagers pushing carts of goods and traveling into and out of town, sometimes on horseback. The eye follows this lively village of white buildings and tan roofs as it weaves its way up the mountain slope to what appears to be a royal dwelling or city center capped with emerald green rooftops and enveloped by rolling white clouds.

Bodhisattva Tara (Tibetan, Jetsun Dolma)

Artist Unknown, Tibet or Nepal

A suberply cast hollow bronze figure of Tara, a Buddhist goddess, shown leated in the lalitasana pose ("royal ease," with one knee bent and the other relaxed), her right hand extended to her right knee in vara mudra (the gesture of charity), and her left hand in vitarka mudra (the gesture of teaching, with the thumb and third finger brought together). She wears a dhoti and jewelry, including an elaborate tiara and enormous lotus-petal design ear plugs. Her face has a broad, open forehead, with wide, slightly arching brows; her eyes are downcast with "s"-shaped upper lids; her nose is straight and long, and her mouth, in a curved Cupid's bow shape, is small but full. Her torso leans slightly to her left, which is balanced by the right tilt of her head. She sits on a double lotus dais with beaded upper and lower rims. The image and the base were case in one piece in the lost-wax method. There are traces of red paint for her mouth and blue paint for her hair.

Milton Avery

Painting depicting a featureless female figure, in tones of aqua and light blue extending across the center of the canvas in a light gray hammock. There is a bright white shape, perhaps a book, in the middle of the figure. Behind the figure, the rest of the composition is organized in horizontal sections. Scholar's Winter Retreat

Gai Qi (Kai Ch'i)

A scholar sits in a relaxed posture at his desk looking at cut plum blossoms in a white vase; before him is an empty sheet of paper and ink stone, and by his side an attendant is boiling water for tea. A crane tucks her head and leg to keep herself warm in the cold winter air. The scholar seems to be contemplating a subject to be drawn or written, perhaps related to the flowers.

Artist Unknown, Tibet or Nepal

A miniature sculpture of a the Tibetan yogin Milarepa as a rotund figure, seated in lalitasana (the posture of royal ease, with one knee drawn up and the other relaxed) on an antelope skin (the head of the antelope can be discerned just under the figure's left foot, as an incised design). The right hand is raised, cusping the right ear as though to better hear, while the left elbow rests on the left knee, and the right hand holds a nettle-shell bowl. Wrapped around his torso, from his right shoulder to his left knee, is a sash (sometimes referred to as a meditation belt), which allows him to keep his body upright during long hours of meditation. The base, cast in a single piece with the figure, is decorated with beading and a single band of lotus petals.

Under the Lamp (Sous la Lampe)

Albert Dubois-Pillet

This is a tondo painting with a circular frame that is painted in tones of violet. It is a still-life scene that shows a lamp, resting on a table, set against a green wall. On the wall behind the lamp is a painting, but only the lower right-hand corner is visible due to the sharp curve of the circular format of the painting. On the table, beside the lamp, is a piece of paper and an ink well in the shape of a human figure. The base of the lamp has a curvilinear profile and the pleated shade is painted in bright colors of orange, pink, green and yellow. Both the scene and the frame are painted with short, dot-like brushstrokes.
