Title: Bencharong Ware Spitton with Buddhist dieties Thapanom and Norasingh, and Chinese fire patterns

Physical Description: Bencharong ware spittoon made in a private kiln in Jingdezhen, China, for Thai market. Probably ordered from Thai royalty, under the reign of Rama II (r. 1809-1824). It is the porcelain ware enameled with multiple colors, in the style called “five colors” (“bencharong” refers to five colors in Sanskrit). It has a large mouth and bulbous shape, with design of minor Buddhist deities Thepanom and Norasingh, and Chinese fire patterns.

Physical Description: Small-size covered box, the lotus bud handle and surrounding medallion in brown, the body and lid with alternating panels of vegetal scrolls and lattices. Each panel is separated by a raised line. The foot is painted brown. Clear glaze.

Physical Description: Gilt bronze statue of monk with a begging bowl over his shoulder. This is Phra Malai, who achieved extraordinary powers through his accumulated merit and was able to visit numerous hells and heavens and then travel back to report on what he had seen. Phrai Malai has elongated ears and stands on a wooden base wearing a detailed robe.

Physical Description: Small-size covered box, with a handle surrounded by a raised stylized calyx, which imitates the growth pattern of the top of a mangosteen, and a band of star points at the rim of the lid. The body has a band of vegetal scrolls. Brown-and-cream glaze.
