Balbir Sen of Mandi sits with his legs tucked under him against a purplish bolster on an oval orange carpet with a green border. He wears a white garment with green borders and some jewelry: a ring, bracelets, an armlet, necklaces, earrings and wears a green turban with a turban jewel across the front, surmounted by a black feathered aigrette. A sword signifying his rank lies across his body. He sits in strict profile with a heavy black beard and mustache. The paper is plain and uncolored except around the figure, which is painted against a white wash taking the shape of the seated man and his setting.

Inscriptions in devanagari script are above the painting.

The forest is represented by two trees and a few sprays of foliage; the deer is a mundane gray, not magical gold; and Sita waits anxiously in a white marble pavilion, rather than a thatched hut. The vibrantly colored backgrounds divide the composition into zones that create mood and organize the narrative.

Physical Description

A medium size, well potted jar with round shoulder and shorter neck. Inside is not totally glazed. On the body, pine, bamboo, and plum trees are finely painted with blue underglaze. Then a translucent glaze is applied, which turns into milky, white color. It has three floral decorations on the shoulder; the decoration is originated in functional elements of “ears” to which ropes were tied for transportation. The neck has a band of double lines and spray design of peony flowers and leaves. The rim of the neck is unglazed. The foot is unglazed; eye is glazed. Some imperfections of glaze are seen toward the bottom. Glaze is scraped off on one part. Many speckles on the surface.

Physical Description

The vase uses Shigaraki clay and the wood-firing process. The deformities and imperfections are intentional, and in Iga style. It has a lopsided lip edge at the top, with a deep indentation circling the vase just below it. The texture of this piece is splotchy and ridged, and the colors are earth tones, ranging from tans to dark, forest greens.

It is a long, rectangular unglazed ceramic piece, intended to be shown in horizontal position. Two thick slabs are connected with bridges inside. The front part has almost flat surface; there is a deep cut on the left side, in which mass of worm-like inner surface can be seen. The same surface is revealed in the middle, as well as on the right edge. The top of the slab has a several shallow holes and one deep cut, inside of which has worm-like surface, as explained above. There is also a dent on the top and on the right, from which worm-like mass seems to be coming out. Reddish shadows cast on left side, in the middle, and the right. There is a patch of clay on left side near the left cut. The bottom is flat.

Physical Description

It is a medium size porcelain vase with pomegranate design in blue underglaze. The body is round with gentle shoulders; the mouth is wide and the neck is short and slightly inward. It has no foot. The pomegranate fruit and leaves are quickly executed with broad brush around the shoulder and the middle of the body. There is a band of a single line around the mouth and another around near the bottom. There is the artist’s signature “yû” on the eye. There is no foot but unglazed ring around the bottom; the eye is glazed.

Physical Description

This is an unglazed stoneware bizen jar fired in a wood-burning kiln.

It has a hard, smooth surface with decorative incisions near the top of the jar. The lower portion has effect of color gradation of reds and browns. The lid seems to dip into the jar, and has a know handle. The entire piece is not perfectly formed, but has an organic aesthetic.

It is a vertically long, rectangular shaped vase. The body is slightly tilted; its four corners are shaved from the top to the bottom. The clay color is orange-yellow; the body is glazed with porous, milky white ash glaze. The bottom edge of the body and the bottom are unglazed. It has no foot.

Physical Description

A medium size plate has blue-and-white underglaze painting of landscape. There are two groups of mountains; one of the left has two large rocks flanked by two smaller mountains with a few trees on the tops. Three smaller rocks peek from the water. On the right side, a range of gently sloped mountains and a rock are drawn. There are two fishing boats with masts can be seen in front of the mountain range. The crescent moon, shadowed by one side, is in the sky. The drawing is executed in thick underglaze and painted in lighter glaze. There are brown speckles on the surface; reddish color stains on the top of the rim. Some chips on the rim and on the back. The foot is unglazed; eye is glazed. There is a single band around the rim.

This elegant self-portrait depicts a half-length figure of a man in three-quarters profile with his left arm resting on a stone ledge. This unfinished painted study depicts a crowd of figures gathered around three richly dressed men and a woman and child, who appear on a flight of stairs near the entrance to a large building decorated with classical columns and pilasters. An elderly bald man wearing a red cloak trimmed with ermine kneels with his head bowed at the top of the stairs before a kneeling woman who holds an infant in her right arm. Another man wearing a turban decorated with a large feather stands behind the kneeling man and holds a gold censer hanging from a chain in his left hand. A third richly dressed man stands at the bottom of the stairs with his back turned toward the viewer. A number of other figures crowd around this central group from the sides. A large ox sits in the right foreground with a donkey standing behind it.
