Illumination de la Grande Cascade de Saint Cloud
Artist
Philbert-Louis Debucourt
Physical Description
This colored etching with aquatint depicts a night scene of a large illuminated cascade of fountains. A raised architectural structure with three arches is placed in the center left of the composition. A series of cascades descend from this structure and lead into a pool of water decorated with a series of geyser fountains spouting water upward. Many small groups of figures in elegant costumes are gathered around the water. Their costumes appear to be hand painted in pink, blue, white and black wash. The upper third of the image is devoted to the dark night sky.

Dorje Legpa Votive Plaque
Artist
Artist Unknown, Tibet or Nepal
Physical Description
A bas-relief carving made of bone and in the shape of a lotus petal, depicting Pehar, a guardian of the Tibetan Buddhist faith, in wrathful form. At the base of the "petal" are the tops of mountains, with the waves of the sea visible between them; in the rounded part of the "petal," a border of flames encircles a dynamic image of Pehar, his garments flowing in the wind as he rides on a snow lion. The background behind Pehar is incised with closely spaced wavy lines, again suggesting flames.

Temple in the Mountains
Artist
Kanô School
Physical Description
The composition is a well-established type: a complex of temple buildings is tucked into a mountainside, on the shore of a broad body of water, with mists rising to obscure the distant peaks. The artist provides a path leading from the viewer’s space to the temple. Two travelers go before us, a hooded figure riding a donkey over a rustic bridge, and another man striding along on foot, further ahead. The temple buildings themselves are hidden behind thick foliage, as if protected from the secular world. Here the forms of the rocky outcroppings, the trees, and even the mountains are starkly outlined, and there are strong contrasts of light and dark. These features suggest that this is a work of by a professional Kanô School artist, probably of the seventeenth century.
