Scene in the Catskills

Thomas Cole

This landscape painting depicts a rocky hillside beneath a blue sky and towering cloud formations. In the foreground area, a stream flows between boulders and cascades over rocks. There is a large square boulder with the roots and stump of a dead tree. The right side of the painting has green vegetation along the edege of the stream and tall green-leafed trees further back on the side of the hill. On the left, beyond the hill, there is a glimpse of far distant mountains. This scene is painted in warm tones of green and brown in a realistic manner. Patches of sunlight highlight areas of the hillside, boulders and the stream.

Interior of a Pompeiian Home with Figures (The Impluvium)

Eugène Viollet-le-Duc

An ink drawing in shades of gray with very exact detailing of objects and architectural elements in the scene. It shows the interior of a Roman house with sunlight streaming into an open courtyard with a fountain. The stone fountain has a square basin supported by a pedestal and a standing nude sculpture above it. One wall of the courtyard is decorated with floral designs and two figural scenes. A small bush is growing in a dirt area of the floor and there are two large vessels against the wall. Two figures are standing in a colonnade to the left of the courtyard. One is a woman dressed in a toga who is looking at a man dressed in a short sleeved tunic. The decorations of the floor, walls and ceiling depict ancient classical designs such as ascanthus leaves, meander and scroll patterns and the roof tiles have floral plume decorations and lion's head spouts.

Progress of Beauty 2

Mark Kostabi

Line drawing in felt tip marker on ivory ~ 10x13” paper with shading. Woman’s arm and dress filled in completely with black, as well as a pane of the stained glass window that she holds. The wall, pitcher, parts of the woman’s head and shoulder covering and bodice, and cash register have been modeled in stylized “half tone” of zigzag separating white and black; shadows take the form of dense curlicues. The tablecloth bears splotches of black ink that were possibly made by blowing air on wet ink through a straw. The map has been filled in with ink drips and splatters.

One of a pair of six-fold screens

Attributed Kanô Tan'yû

This six-fold screen, a half of a pair, is meant to represent six of the twelve months of the year, with keen attention paid to the birds and flowers associated with each. Although this screen bears Kano Tan’yu’s signature, it was probably created by his studio or by followers working in this famous artist’s style.

One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: #107 Fukagawa, Susaki and the Jumantsubo Plain

Andô Hiroshige

This vertical print frames a view of a landscape with an up close view of a bird in the upper right corner that takes up about thirty percent of the image.

The viewer is positioned alongside the bird, circling the sky above the twin peaks of a mountain. A crate floats in the water below while smaller birds flocking around it. Snow covers the ground.

The signature and title markings are in the upper right corner, and in the middle along the left side above the landscape.

Abstract Composition (Abstrakte Komposition)

László Moholy-Nagy

A spare and restrained abstract composition, built up out of layers of mostly translucent basic geometric forms. The grey tones of the background are created with large rectangle shapes. In the upper part of the piece is a light colored circle, with a brighter circle inside it. Both are crossed by an axis of bright, thin orange lines. On the left, the point of a triangle protrudes from the edge. It is covered by a faint gray trapezoidal shape. Three small black semi-circles are also visible: one along the lines inside the circles; the other two along the trapezoidal shape and just beneath the triangle.
