The Supper Table

John Koch

This painting shows a woman and a boy sitting at a dining table that is set for a meal. The woman, on the right side of the composition, is shown in a profile view and is using a ladle to pour soup into a bowl. The boy, seated in a ladder back chair, is holding a spoon with his hands resting on the table. He is gazing at the soup bowl. Both figures have somber, quiet facial expressions. A table lamp, seen only partially on the far left of the painting, is the single source of light. So, the figures and the table top are brightly lit, but the rest of the setting is very dark. Items on the table such as the plate with melon, the milk bottle, the salt and pepper shakers and the tablecloth, are shown in realistic detail, much like a still- life painting.

Ornament Print from a series: 'Grottesco in diversche manieren'

Hans Vries

Within an elaborate decorative framework consisting of griffins, birds, dogs, and fantastic half man-half beast creatures is a central panel with the image of a nude woman standing on a column holding a victor's wreath in either hand. Approaching for either side is a man in a quadriga holding a banner; each also holds a line that extends up to the wreath in the woman's hand.

Annunciation

Artist Unknown, Antwerp School, Belgium

An angel, holding a scepter in his left hand and making a gesture of speech with his right, interrupts the Virgin at her reading. She kneels on the floor and rests her left hand on an open book placed atop a lectern. A vase with a flowering lily sits on the floor between the angel and the Virgin and a small white dove encircled by a halo hovers between them. The scene unfolds within an elaborate and richly decorated interior that includes a chair and canopied bed in the background.

Détails de la frise de la retraite des Apôtres, Valée de Hinnom, Jérusalem

Auguste Salzmann

A large stone carving occupies the center of the image. Above is rough-cut stone, indicating that the carving is part of a larger stone setting; below is a recess and darkness, indicating that the carving acts as a kind of decorative lintel above a cave entrance. The carving itself consists of eight square zones (or metopes) and within each is a decorative pattern of radial symetry (circles) or vegetative imagery.

Untitled

André Masson

This abstracted drawing in black ink contains a series of lines and shapes that evoke a sense of motion from the upper right to the lower left of the composition. Long parallel lines on a diagonal from the top right to bottom left reinforce this sense of movement. Swirling abstracted forms surround these lines and the composition is speckled with very fine splatterings of ink throughout.
