Crested kimono with elaborate floral wax resist designs (hageito, nandina, biwa, camelia, daffodils, omoto, plums, thistles) against crackled pink-on-taupe ground, with embroidery in metallic threads

Minagawa Gekka

This is a pink silk crepe kimono with wax-resist patterns, hand-painted design and metallic threads embroidery. The kimono is in full length and has elongated sleeves. The fabric is dyed with pink, leaving the family crest under the collar and the floral design part white. The red scale pattern is added using wax-resist technique. Then the design of multiple kinds of plants is hand-painted with white, red, yellow, and pale and blue green colors. There are mix of fall and winter flowers and trees: nandin on the left sleeve, plum, chrysanthemums, thistles, amaranths, camellias and narcissus on the front and back, makino (Chloranthus glaber, with red berries) and more camellias on the right sleeve. Embroidery is added in various metallic threads around the contours of flowers and leaves.

Buddha, seated in the padmasana pose, in bhumisparsa mudra

Artist Unknown, Tibet or Nepal

A hollow cast bronze sculpture of the Buddha, including a lotus base. The bronze has a dark, shiny patina over most of its surface.

The Buddha sits with his legs crossed in the padmasana pose; his right hand reaches down, palm inwards, to touch the earth, in an elegant gesture with just the tip of his third finger making contact, while his right hand rests in his lap. His torso is tall and erect. His dhoti (a skirt-like garment) is tied high on his torso, while his outer robe covers his left shoulder completely and just brushes against his right shoulder. His face is shaped like a tall and narrow "U," with wide, gently arching brows, downcast eyes under swelling lids, a long and high nose, and full, cupid's-bow lips. The urna, an auspicious mark on his forehead, is indicated here by a small bump with an incised outline. His hair is arranged in rows of snail-shell curls, which are repeated in a larger size on his ushnisha, culminating in a lotus bud.

The upward-pointing lotus petals on the dais are in high relief, with curling tips.

Redoubt

Charles Clough

High-gloss abstract expressionist painting of a large Africa-shaped form in red against black ground. Clough’s unique way of applying paint to the canvas results in a highly articulated and densely textured surface. “In place of the brush and other typical painter's tools, Clough uses an instrument he calls the ‘Big Finger,’ a large balloon-like contraption that he invented to spread poured house enamel on masonite into broad gestural constellations.” (Max Henry, “charles clough,” http://www.artnet.com/magazine_pre2000/reviews/henry/henry2-5-99.asp)

The Laundress

Aristide Maillol

This bronze statue depicts a female figure kneeling and bending forward with her arms outstretched. She grasps a long piece of cloth which is stretched on the ground in front of her. She looks directly at the cloth with an intent expression. The woman is wearing a long skirt which covers her legs and feet and swirls around her on the ground. Her blouse has flowing sleeves that end at the elbows, leaving her forearms bare. Her hair is pulled back and gatherred into a knot. The bronze has a dark green patina and the surface of the statue is smooth and polished.
