Blue-and-white jar with floral and leaf design

Artist Unknown, Hizen ware, Japan

A medium size, well potted jar with round shoulder and shorter neck. Inside is not totally glazed. On the body, pine, bamboo, and plum trees are finely painted with blue underglaze. Then a translucent glaze is applied, which turns into milky, white color. It has three floral decorations on the shoulder; the decoration is originated in functional elements of “ears” to which ropes were tied for transportation. The neck has a band of double lines and spray design of peony flowers and leaves. The rim of the neck is unglazed. The foot is unglazed; eye is glazed. Some imperfections of glaze are seen toward the bottom. Glaze is scraped off on one part. Many speckles on the surface.

Kokon Jôruri zukushi series: 'Ishidômaru' (Kûkai as a child)

Andô Hiroshige

This print illustrates a scene in a jôruri play based on history. Ishidômaru is the childhood name of a figure better known to history as Kûkai, the early 9th-century founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism in Japan. In this scene, the child Ishidômaru has come to the remote mountain of Mt. Kôya in search of his father, a warrior who had taken the tonsure. When the two finally met, the father refused to recognize his son. The rejection of family ties was one of the basic tenets of monastic life in Buddhism.

Geese and Reeds (two of a pair)

Ki-hun Yang

A grounded and a flying goose is paired in both paintings, creating a contrast of stillness and movement. A goose swoops into the scene from the top left, while the neck of the grounded goose follows a graceful curve to look at the approaching bird. The swaying reeds and grass around the grounded goose add lightness to the composition. Between the two geese are three lines of calligraphy.

Margarita at the Metropolitian Museum (Margarita #1)

Lynn Davis

An interesting composition, rather than a typical portrait shot, the right side is of a man's back, facing the woman and reaching towards her. The woman, wearing a short haircut and a black and white dress looks up to him. Due to the pair's dress, they are possibly at a formal event, also suggested by the pole and velvet rope seen in the bottom left corner.
