Temple in the Mountains; Kanô School; Attributed to

Title
Temple in the Mountains
Artist
Kanô School
Physical Description
The composition is a well-established type: a complex of temple buildings is tucked into a mountainside, on the shore of a broad body of water, with mists rising to obscure the distant peaks. The artist provides a path leading from the viewer’s space to the temple. Two travelers go before us, a hooded figure riding a donkey over a rustic bridge, and another man striding along on foot, further ahead. The temple buildings themselves are hidden behind thick foliage, as if protected from the secular world. Here the forms of the rocky outcroppings, the trees, and even the mountains are starkly outlined, and there are strong contrasts of light and dark. These features suggest that this is a work of by a professional Kanô School artist, probably of the seventeenth century.

Eckhardt, 120 West Adams Street, Chicago, Ill. - "Son! Do You Know That Your Seed Corn Will Grow?" - Get Your Seed Corn Now - The seed corn situation is the worst in the history of the State. If wheat or oats fail, we can plant corn and grown a paying crop. When corn planting time comes you must have good seed, or fail. Hundreds of farmers have put away corn not a kernel of which will grow. Damp weather in October; immature corn; and early hard freezing has killed it. Test your seed corn. Know it will grow. Help yourself and help each other. Prepare the seed bed well. Don't plant corn too deep. Help yourself--don't depend upon others. - Corn Is Illinois' Greatest Crop - No greater mistake can be made by the farmers of the Corn Belt than to reduce materially the area in corn. The system of farming and the crops that you have proven good and most profitable for the past twenty years are those that should be followed and grown this year. If you are in need of seed corn, or if you have a surplus that might be used to help someone else, consult___________ - Prices For Corn - (price list) - Corn germinating 70-79% will be used only as a last resort, except in case of exceptionally desirable corn.

The Annunciation; Juan de Valdés Leal

Title
The Annunciation
Artist
Juan de Valdés Leal
Physical Description
An angel, draped with a flowing red mantle, descends on the left from a bank of clouds. He holds a scepter and twisting scroll in his left hand while he points with his right toward a white dove encircled by a halo of light that descends toward a woman dressed in long robes and a veil. She sits, holding a book open on the lectern before her, and draws back slightly with her right hand raised and her eyes downcast. Six cherubim sit above on the edge of the cloudbank, which opens to reveal a male figure barely visible in the blinding light that fills the cloud.
