- Fighting in France for Freedom! Are You Helping at Home? - Connecticut State Council of Defense
- Artist
- Artist Unknown
- Physical Description
- Text: Fighting in France for Freedom!--Are YOU Helping at Home? - Wild and enthusiastic times marked the victory day's celebration all over the country. Every city vied in having celebrations on Monday when hostilities ceased and it was one joyful day in every place in the United States. New York was a pandemonium of joy and everybody knows they celebrate with a vengeance. Photograph shows one instance of the crowds which Mayor Hyland addressed. - THE TRAILS OF "OUR BOYS" WON'T CEASE WITH PEACE. - When the fighting ends, American soldiers will have to be kept in France a long time. Without the excitement of battle they'll be more homesick and restless than ever before. An that's why every man and every woman must contribute to the United War Work Fund. - IS ANYTHING TOO MUCH?

- Engraved Powder Horn
- Artist
- Artist Unknown
- Physical Description
- Animal horn engraved with the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom, in which a crowned lion and a chained unicorn supporting a shield stand above a banner with the motto “dieu et mon droit” (which directly translated from French means “God and my right” referring to the monarch’s divine right to govern which has been used as the motto of the British monarch since it was adopted by Henry V (1413-1422)). The shield consists of four quadrants: the first quadrant contains four lions, the second contains three fleurs de lis, the third contains a mermaid and a harp, the fourth contains three lions and a stag or dog-like animal. Surrounding the shield is a belt or garter upon which is emblazoned “Honi soit qui mal y pense” which means “evil unto they who think evil,” the motto of the Order of the Knights of the Garter, an ancient exclusive British order consisting of 25 members who were selected by the king of England. Near the base, the horn is engraved with a cityscape of Philadelphia from the harbor with numerous buildings, towers, boats and ships, and a man with a rifle shooting at a stag or lion in the distance.

- The Supper Table
- Artist
- John Koch
- Physical Description
- This painting shows a woman and a boy sitting at a dining table that is set for a meal. The woman, on the right side of the composition, is shown in a profile view and is using a ladle to pour soup into a bowl. The boy, seated in a ladder back chair, is holding a spoon with his hands resting on the table. He is gazing at the soup bowl. Both figures have somber, quiet facial expressions. A table lamp, seen only partially on the far left of the painting, is the single source of light. So, the figures and the table top are brightly lit, but the rest of the setting is very dark. Items on the table such as the plate with melon, the milk bottle, the salt and pepper shakers and the tablecloth, are shown in realistic detail, much like a still- life painting.

- W. Jones, Lime-burner, Thames Street, one of the "Sixteen Etchings," or the "Thames Set"
- Artist
- James McNeill Whistler
- Physical Description
- A man stands within a wooden building, postioned half-way down a deep vista that goes all the way through the building. At the far end of the passageway, a seated figure faces out looking at water and buildings on the opposite shore. The standing man's figure is illuminated by a bright (unseen) overhead light source, such as a skylight, and pairs of ladders are visible on either side of his figure. The foreground of the image consists of dark timbers that frame the view of the passageway and figures; beyond the man, the wooden architecture becomes a jumble of different sloped ceilings and walls, suggesting that this part of the building was constructed at different times or ad hoc.

- Ambroise Paré: Surgery Acquires Stature
- Artist
- Robert Thom
- Physical Description
- Ambroise Paré, a young French army surgeon with troops of King François at Turin, in 1536, had his first experience treated men for arquebus wounds. Running ouf of boiling oil (traditional treatment for gunshot injuries), he improvised, discovered that unburned patients healed much better, and resolved never to use hot oil again. Countless soliders and citizens benefited from this rule. It was some years later, in 1552, that Paré put aside cautery irons used to stop bleeding in amputations and reintroduced ligatures for tying blood vessels. During his life (1510-1590), inventive, observant, compassionate Paré served as surgeon to four French kings; earned the title: "Father of Surgery."
