Black crested haori with faux-resist dyed designs of chrysanthemum arabesques in yellow, red, and blue on crackled orange ground with embroidery
Artist
Minagawa Gekka
Physical Description
It is a black silk damask haori (short jacket for kimono) with wax-resist patterns, hand-painted design and metallic threads embroidery. The haori is in medium length, covering just underneath hip. It has elongated sleeves. The silk fabric is woven in a twill pattern of palace carts and flower baskets. Then the fabric is dyed with black. The white family crest under the collar and the diagonal part where chrysanthemum design would appear are left out from dying. The pinkish orange scale pattern is added using wax-resist technique. Chrysanthemum design is hand-painted with white, red, yellow, and blue colors. Finally embroidery is added in various metallic threads around the contours of the chrysanthemum petals and leaves.
Orange satin damask lining with woven wave design, with stenciled (?) designs of white flying cranes. Silver cord on one side, gold on the other, both with tassels.

Fame and Erato, Muse of Love Poetry
Artist
Sebastiano Conca
Physical Description
Two women accompanied by a pair of putti appear seated in the foreground of this painting. On the left sits a winged woman crowned with a laurel wreath and wearing a long white robe and a vivid ocher-colored mantle. She leans on a globe while cradling a large book in her right arm to which she points with her left hand. In her right hand she holds a compass. A putto peeks from beneath her mantle, and a viol is visible beneath the globe. The other woman sits on a cloud. She wears a golden crown and a richly colored blue mantle. She grasps a lyre with her left hand and leans toward the woman seated next to her, gesturing in the direction of the book with her right hand. A second putto stands near her left shoulder holding a gold circlet in his left hand. The background is filled with glimpses of neoclassical architecture, including fluted columns and a facade with a row of Ionic columns supporting an entablature.

Nagoya-style Obi with wax-resist overall pattern of crackled pink-on-white, interrupted by wax-resist and embroidered designs of colorful tropical orchids
Artist
Minagawa Gekka
Physical Description
The obi is made of satin damask silk woven with “flower in tortoise-shell” patterns. “Cracked ice” pattern in red is dyed with wax-resist technique. Orchid flowers, leaves, ginger leaves, and ferns are hand painted in white, yellow, black, red, and green. Silver threads are embroidered in the rim of orchid flowers and other plants; more colored metallic and velvet threads are applied. The “cracked ice” patterns are broader adjacent to plants and red dye outlines them; that suggests that the artist designed flowers and foliage before the wax-resist application. The plant designs are located on two parts of the obi; when wearing, one will appear in front, and other will appear on the back bow.
