This black and white etching depicts a winter scene along a harbor. A line of many boats with high masts separates the water from the land at a diagonal from the lower right corner up to the center of the horizon line. On the left side of the horizon line there is a row of tall buildings. On the left and center in the mid-ground are crowds of figures and horse-drawn carriages along the snowy shore. The upper two-thirds of the composition are devoted to the lightly crosshatched sky.

Two rough figures dominate the composition with a lightly etched landscape behind them. Both figures hold a staff and each is dressed in ragged clothes. In addition, the scallop shell, indicating that they are pilgrims to the shrine of St. James the Greater at Santiago de Compostela, is visible on the brims of their hats, and on the left shoulder of the man standing to the right.

Physical Description
The single figure of a beggar dominates the composition. Dressed in rags and leaning on a staff, the figure faces the viewer and is shown walking with only slight indication of setting, principally the man's shadows.
Two punctures approximately 4cm apart at the upper center. Paper size: h 21 2/5cm x w 15 1/10cm. Plate size: lh 13 7/10cm & rh 13 2/5cm x tw 8 3/5cm & bw 8 7/10cm.
