- Autumn Moon at Mt. Dongting
- Artist
- Wu Qingyun (Wu Ch'ing-yun)
- Physical Description
- Dark, wet ink wash and light accents of color capture the lyrical mood of an autumnal moonlit night at Lake Tai and Mount Dongting. A round moon hangs low in the sky at top right, with a diffuse glow slightly brightening the clouds and sky below. Two islands sit in the water below, the larger (closer) of the two has four boats moored just offshore. Up close the boats appear as freely brushed lines, and yet at a distance, their forms come into focus. A building sits on the closer island, light shining in the windows. The silhouette of a pagoda can be seen on the further island.

- Home in the Hills
- Artist
- Thomas Doughty
- Physical Description
- This landscape painting shows rounded green mountains receding into the distance and soft sunlight streaming through billowy white clouds. In the foreground, painted in tones of dark brown and green, there is a rocky formation and a small waterfall formed by a stream passing over the rocks. One tall tree with lush greenery stands on the far left and a smaller tree frames the scene on the right. In the central part of the painting there is a stone house and pond. A few figures are scattered in this grassy area and someone stands in the open doorway of the house. The background shows a wide valley extending into the distance. Spots of sunlight highlight areas of the landscape such as the waterfall, the house, tree formations and the hillside above the house.

- Nagoya-style Obi with wax-resist overall pattern of crackled pink-on-white, interrupted by wax-resist and embroidered designs of colorful tropical orchids
- Artist
- Minagawa Gekka
- Physical Description
- The obi is made of satin damask silk woven with “flower in tortoise-shell” patterns. “Cracked ice” pattern in red is dyed with wax-resist technique. Orchid flowers, leaves, ginger leaves, and ferns are hand painted in white, yellow, black, red, and green. Silver threads are embroidered in the rim of orchid flowers and other plants; more colored metallic and velvet threads are applied. The “cracked ice” patterns are broader adjacent to plants and red dye outlines them; that suggests that the artist designed flowers and foliage before the wax-resist application. The plant designs are located on two parts of the obi; when wearing, one will appear in front, and other will appear on the back bow.

- BOTTOM: River Landscape with Four Men Encamping on a Rock (Flußlandschaft mit vier auf einem Fels lagernden Männern), sheet 5 from the folio 12 Views of Normandy (XII Vues de la Normandie)
- Artist
- Franz Edmund Weirotter
- Physical Description
- 5 physical tears on left edge, indicating the original book bindings.
- TOP IMAGE. A river appears in lower right corner, traveling from "front" to "back" of image. Along its banks two distant windmills occur, indicating Holland as the location. A distant boat with sails, and a closer group of three row boats on river. The closer group has thee figures bent over their work, which looks like hauling nets. In the center is a nearly barren twisted tree, at whose base is a rough hut of blanks and branches. A path from the bottom right bends up and around the hut and tree, on which a small group of three are poised (two sitting figures appear to listen to a standing third) and a single man travels further into the distance. Houses with thatched roofs, some patched with boards, appear on the right of the image, along the riverbanks into the distance.
- BOTTOM IMAGE. A river curves gently back from the bottom right. Boulders surround the bank on the left half of the image, with scraggly trees and vegetation. Several boulders stretch out into the water, and on one of these, on the bottom right, is a group of perhaps three viewers. Two are seated, and appear to be listening to a third, who is standing and pointing to the right. Hills can be seen in the bottom right corner, stretching into the distance along the river.

- Sunrise at Benten Shrine, Suzaki Cape
- Artist
- Katsushika Hokusai
- Physical Description
- Two geisha (itinerant musicians) are shown strolling in the countryside, with the roof of Benten Shintô shrine in the distance. The backdrop is the rising sun—the give-away that this is a New Year’s print—seen over distant mountains and a calm bay. One woman stoops to empty the ashes from her pipe, while the other draws her kimono closely about her. A poem lies just above the rising sun in the top left register of the morning sky.

- Kronborg
- Artist
- Luigi Kasimir
- Physical Description
- Horizontal format etching of a Kronborg city square settled on the edge of a body of water. In the foreground are the roofs and upper levels of buildings, suggesting that the view is looking down on the square from a high-up window. The buildings are drawn with great detail, all the carvings in the stone of the foreground are pronounced, and the buildings further in the distance have their detailed work and brick patterns clearly visible. In the small area of the street square is a group of figures holding long objects, possibly for the purpose of playing a game of some sort. The sky above the buildings and sea is dark, grey and cloudy, whose color is reflected on the water. In the far distance another hilly shoreline is visible.
