- Seen from the water, which dominates the foreground, a barge with a standing man and woman occupy the middle distance. Beyond to the left a three-masted ship is in dry-dock, separated from other buildings and activities on the right by a small inlet of water. Behind the barge to the right is a complex of clapboard buildings; at the far right is another sailing ship pulled out of water. A group of men with flaming torches are tarring the exterior of the hull. This is a view of a busy dockyard along the river Thames under a blustery, cloudy sky.

- This work portrays a view across a river, whose surface is dotted with shipping. Drawn from a very high vantage point, a roadway is seen through a screen of nearly leafless trees at the bottom of the image; in the distance the far bank of the shore is congested with buildings, some towers--particularly a large one to the right of center--and smoke blowing away and to the right from the viewer can be seen.

The distant view, seen between the piers, include a suspension bridge to the left of the central pier and the tower of a church or other buildings to the right.
