Death of the Virgin (reverse copy after Schongauer)
Artist
Israhel Meckenem
Physical Description
A four-poster bed with curtains drawn back within an interior is angled towards the viewer, showing a woman reclined on the bed and attended by numerous figures. A lighted taper is placed in her hands, with assistance of a young man on the left side of the bed. Others of the figures stand or kneel with figures hands clasped in prayer; at the lower left corner are two men kneeling at the foot of the bead looking at a book of prayers. The overall effect is concern and movement around the still figure of the woman.

Blue-and-green landscape handscroll
Artist
Tao Cheng (T'ao Ch'eng)
Physical Description
Among the rolling green mountains, figures in this scroll go about their lives, leading cattle to drink along the riverside and dangling fishing lines over the edge of small boats in hopes of catching something for dinner. Highlights of red pigment add brilliance to a grove of trees near the middle of the scroll. The detail work in the trees is spectacular, with twisted and knotted trunks that seem to refuse to stand upright, but bend against gravity, in some cases revealing networks of tangled roots.
