Physical Description
Brightly colored lithograph using Ben Day dots in red-orange and navy blue depicting a field, with high horizon line, two haystacks, trees, shrubs and mountains in the background, and two strips of clouds in the sky.
Subject Matter
Demonstrates Lichtenstein’s use of Ben Day dots, a technique borrowed from comic book illustrations, which he applied to a well-known work from art history, a painting from Monet’s “Haystacks,” a series of works whose primary subjects were stacks of grain and the transience of light across various times of days and seasons. Completely reinterpreted, Lichtenstein’s use of Ben Day dots and a reduced palette of bright red and dark blue underscores his investigation and critique of the conventions of visual representation.
