Physical Description
One in a series of eight photogravures of tin toy figures cast in stark light creating long shadows before a pitch black background.
Two standing female tin figures at center; figure on viewer's left holds a jug in her left hand, a raised right arm holds a lanter; both figures stand amongst a grove of tin trees.
Subject Matter
One of a group of eight in a series illustrating episodes from Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin. A landmark of its time, this anti-slavery novel was first serialized in 1851 and met with tremendous success. The overarching moral of slavery's injustice is manifested in the character of Uncle Tom who suffers at the hands and whims of a series of masters. David Levinthal's use of tin toy figurines, at first glance old fashioned and whimsical, stands in sharp contrast to the darker themes of the stories they are illustrating.
