Subject Matter
The play is known as "The Courier for Hell "or Courier of Hell (Meido no hikyaku ?????) and is a love-suicide play by the Japanese writer Chikamatsu Monzaemon, written in 1711. It was based on historic events that took place in Osaka in 1710 and recount shte love between Chûbei and the prostitue Umekawa.
