Sawamura Tanosuke III was an actor working at the end of the Edo period and in early years of Meiji. Here, he depicts Princess Toki, the love interest of Miuranosuke in the play "Kamakura Sandaiki." The play was originally a Bunraku and tells the tale of Miuranosuke, a battle hero who is restored by the love and unrivaled beauty of Toki, a tragic character who must struggle between her love of Miuranosuke and her devotion to her father. (see Zoe Kincaid, "Kabuki and the Popular Stage").
