- Subject Matter
- A woodblock artist of the Meiji eara, Chikanobu was originally a Tokugawa loyalist. After the fall of the Shogunate, he decided to pursue a career as an artist and moved to Tokyo. Chikanobu had originally studied works by the Kano school, but later apprenticed with Ichiyûsai Kuniyoshi and Kunisada. He portrayed a variety of themes in his work as a ukiyo-e artist, with kabuki actor images constituting only fraction of his repertoire. This series is an historic, rather than contemporary, image of kabuki actors. Both Iwai Matsunosuke and Nakamura Tsuruzô were famed actors from the Edo era. Printed almost twenty years after the end of the Edo period, this image is a tribute to famous actors of the past.
