Physical Description
Outdoor scene of a park setting with small figures and an urn atop a stone column-like form in the left foreground rendered in bold, flat, horizontal patches of color in browns, greens and whites.
Subject Matter
View of the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris executed in bold, horizontal brushstrokes. Prendergast’s true subject was color, rapidly painted in distinct patches and rhythmically arranged on the canvas to give surface pattern to the composition with little attempt at illusionistic space.
