Physical Description
Goldweight in the shape of a war horn decorated with three bells at the mouth of the horn and a narrow, sloping mouthpiece.
Subject Matter
This figurative goldweight represents a war horn, as they were used at the royal courts of Akan-speaking chiefs and kings (in contemporary Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire). Actual war horns were often made of ivory and decorated with various objects-- in this case, little bells. Horn-blowers (who were always male) were part of the king's entourage and would accompany him in his processions (along with heralds, sword-bearers, priests and priestesses, sandal-bearers and other dignitaries); they would use the horns to sing the praises of the king.
