- Subject Matter
- Goldweights such as this one have been produced by the Asante and other Akan-speaking peoples for at least four centuries. They were already in use on the coast when the Portuguese arrived in the 15th century and remained in use until the British outlawed the gold trade and the use of gold dust as a currency at the end of the 19th century. In 1896 it even became illegal to use gold weights, and their production declined greatly. However, gold weights remained widely available in the local markets in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire throughout the 20th century and have long been a popular collector's item.
