- High-footed ceramic pot with one large central hu-shaped pot and four smaller hu-shaped pouts that encircle it. The upper and lower body of the main pot is decorated with bands of incised “bowstrings” decoration.
- Subject Matter
- The function of this vessel is shrouded in mystery. The upper and lower body of the main pot is decorated with bands of incised “bowstrings” decoration in the manner of Han-dynasty bronze and lacquer hu-shaped jars. Pouring from this vessel would be awkward, so it was unlikely used in everyday life, and was possibly used for the storage of grain in a funerary context. Pots with five false spouts are believed to have held the “Five Grains” that form part of ancient Chinese burial rites.
