A curving boulevard with carriages is seen at the bottom of the image. Along side is a river with barges and other shipping. Beyond a railroad trestle crosses the river; trains and steam/smoke are visible. On the opposite bank are many buildings.
Subject Matter
Like "Little London" and other lithographs of this period, this work was drawn from the balcony of the Whistlers' suite of rooms at the Savoy Hotel. Here the curve of the Embankment in the foreground leads to the Charing Cross Bridge over which trains billowing smoke are crossing. Claude Monet, at Whistler's recommendation, also depicted views of the sweep of the Thames from the Savoy.
