An Old Blast-Furnace. [Volume: 8, Issue: 5, 1889, pp. 301-302]

Journal of the United States association of charcoal iron workers.

302 JUNITED STATES ASSOCIATION OF [VOL. 8, "Carter Furnace is located in Carter County, Tennessee, and was built in 1844. It was always run as a cold-blast furnace, the blast being furnished by a pair of wooden tubs and a water-wheel. All the fixtures were in the primitive character of that date. The product never exceeded six tons per day; but the pig-iron was pronounced equal to any in the country. Wheels made of this iron exclusively have made their sixteen years mileage on the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad. The furnace was dismantled after forty years' service. The same ores are now being used in our furnace." THE continuation of the description of the Lake Champlain ironore district from JOURNAL, page 218, is deferred to give place to the papers and proceedings of the annual meeting of the Association. We expect to continue this description, and also the articles on concentration of iron-ores, in future issues.
