No. 2.1 CHARCOAL IRON WORKERS. 125 The Association and the Tariff. The special committee appointed at the last annual meeting to memorialize Congress, met in Washington on January 14th, and after a full discussion of the position of the charcoal industry, and the advanced stage of the Senate substitute for what is pop. ularly called the " Mills Bill," decided to confine its efforts to a general statement and to call attention to several evasions of existing laws and specialities of manufacture. Through the courtesy of Senators M. S. Quay, of Pennsylvania; William B. Allison, of Iowa; N. B. Aldrich, of Rhode Island; Frank Hiscock, of New York, and J. P. Jones, of Nevada, a special interview was arranged for the evening of January 15th, when the Association's committee met the sub-committee of the Committee on Finance of the United States Senate, and presented the following memorial: Hon. W. B. ALLISON, Chairman Sub-Committee, Committee on Finance, United States Senate: SIR: The undersigned, a committee of the United States Association of Charcoal Iron Workers (an organization whose membership is extended through most of the States), respectfully represent that at the annual meeting of said Association the following resolution was adopted: "Resolved, That a committee be appointed to memorialize Congress, urging that such action be taken in regard to our tariff laws and customs duties as will more perfectly protect and encourage the manufacture in the United States of the various products in which the membership of this Association is interested." With such as our commission we would represent to you that the prominent feature of the late presidential canvass, and the issue upon which the country fairly pronounced was that the inequalities and errors existing in the present tariff schedule should be remedied by the friends of the American policy of protection;
