The Use of High Temperatures of Blast at Charcoal Furnaces. [Volume: 3, Issue: 6, December, 1882, pp. 368-379]

Journal of the United States association of charcoal iron workers.

No. 6.] CHARCOAL IRON WORKERS. 379 We regret that, in revising his remarks, Mr. Goodrich omitted some instructive data concerning the operation of the Warner furnace, when working cold-blast. We shall hope to have this for a future number. During November the furnace made, with hotblast, 1,014 gross tons of pig iron.-ED. NOTE.-We have received from Mr. George F. Baker, secretary, the following statement of the work of MIDLAND FURNACE, Missouri, during the blast ending October 31, 1882: Diameter of bosh, 10 feet. Working height of furnace, 47 feet. (Total height 53 feet.) Number of days in blast, 454. Tons of iron made, (2,268 pounds,) 19,046. Consumption of coal per ton of iron made, actual measurement in bushels of 2680 cubic inches, 87.03. Yield of ore in per cent. of iron, 57.42. Average daily product, (tons,) 41.93. Best days' product, (tons,) 56. Best weeks' product, (tons,) 353. Best months' product, (tons,) 1,505. The pig-iron made was graded as follows: 15,505 tons No. 1 foundry. 2,329 tons No. 2 foundry. 943 tons No. 3. 175 tons No. 4. 94 tons No. 5. No. 6, none. Total, 19,046 tons, (as above.) An average output of 42 pig-iron tons, (over 471 net tons,) per day of iron, of which but 4 per cent graded higher than numbers 1 and 2 foundry pig, is truly remarkable work for a 10 feet by 53 feet furnace; but the low fuel consumption, 87.03 bushels, (2,680 cubic inches,) equivalent to 84.88 bushels of our temporary standard, (2,748 cubic inches,) is, to our mind, the most gratifying feature, and we have given it place as an appropriate statement with which to close this discussion on blast furnace operation.-ED.
