T is-not the purpose of this paper to write
a history of'quartz mining in California, but to show kthe. crude beginning of
quartz milling machinery and the perfection
to which it has now been brought,-a
subject important as history. Up to the
settlement of California, all machinery for
reducing gold-bearing quartz was very crude
and California's beginning was simply to
