Bustards were formerly abundant in England, and, less than a hundred years ago, were to be seen in flocks of fifty or more on the extensive downs of Salisbury Plain, on Newmarket and Royston H e a t h s in Cambridgeshire, the Dorset Uplands, and Lothian in Scotland. The progress of enclosure, and the increase of inhabitants, have gradually driven them away or killed them off; and they are now almost, if not altogether, extinct.
