to foreign countries, of the same articles of breadstuffs for the previous ten years, divided into two periods of five years each, shows
the great increase in the trade for the last year:

It will be observed that the total value of the exports of the above
staples for the last year, exceeds the total value of the same for either
of the above periods of about 5 years each; and the value of the Indian corn and meal exported the past year, exceeds the total value
of the same exported for ten years previous, by about eight millions
of dollars.
If we take the annual average of exports of the same staples from
September 30, 1837, to June 30, 1846, calling the same a period of
ten years (which is near enough for our purpose), and compare these
averages with the exports for the year ending in September, 1847,
we have the following result:
