Tllis is the third instalment of tlie work which M. P~e'nau
seems to regard as his specia~ calling, and for which he would
seem to have the necessary leisure, since his public duties as
~Iembre de l'Institut have ceased. It followed the second
division, "The Apostles," nearly after the same interval as
this had followed the llrst, "The Life of Tesus." The book
before ns breathes exactly the same spirit as its two predecessors, and no one that has read with some care tlie first two
productions of this fertile mind, could be at a loss as to the
paternity of " St. ~anl.," even if it did not bear on its titlepnge ti~e name of its antlior. This spirit is rather nuiclue, and
it is, accordingly, difficult, if not impossible, to rank I,~enan
with any school that pursues or has pnrsued the same end.
This spirit is not that of the English Deist of the last cei~tuThy,
nor that of the ~Volfenbiitte~ Fragmentist, both of whom saw
in tlie Gospels and the other writings of the New Testament
nothing but a tissne of lies; nor is it that of the Rationalismus
