tact between ethics and theology. We are glad, however, to
perceive that he does battle with equal good will, against the
hypothesis which resolves all virtue into disinterested benevolence, as well as that which makes it to consist in an enlightened selfishness: hypotheses, which, however seemingly opposed and contradictory to each other, are yet really but different poles of one and the same great moral heresy.
The author seems to be well read in the literature of his
subject, with the single exception of the prolific results of the
modern German Philosophy; which, however little we may
prize its fruits for their own sake, might, we think, have served
to correct some of the author's oscillations from the true middle point, by its extreme departure on the other side.
