PREADAMITE ARRANGEMENT FOR WATER. 169 The first intimation we have of the particulars of its construction, is made concerning water, in this statement: "And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." And this is all we know, or could be made to understand, and therefore is all the explanation given till the first day, or period, wheni "God said, Let there be light, and there was light." This, too, being incomprehensible to the human mind, unenlightened by scientific developments, is not explained. In the description of the second day, or period, we begin to get a glimpse of the condition of things. "And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament." "In the beginning," the earth was made of molten rocks: fhis is clearly understood by the condition in which we find it; and of course the water existed only in a state of vapor, or in gaseous elements. To " divide the waters from under the firmament from the waters above the firmament," was, therefore, to cool the outside and form a crust of the earth, so that the vapor could be condensed into water, and thus be separated from the vapors in the regions above the earth. The second day, or period, seems, therefore, to have been devoted to a preparation of the supply of water for man, who was not to be created till the sixth day, or period, when all necessary preparations for him should be completed. The third period seems to have been devoted to the same work of perfecting an arrangement for the supply of water. "And God said, Let the waters under the
