CHAPTER XI. ISLAND OF GOTTLAND. THE spread of Baptist principles has not been confined to the main land of Sweden. The Island of Gottland has been visited by our Colporteurs, and the preaching of these earnest and self-denying men has been crowned by the blessing of God. This island is situated in the Baltic Sea, about seventy miles distant from the main land. It is about eighty miles in length, and thirty-three in breadth at the widest part. The climate is described as remarkably mild. Although it is in the same latitude as Labrador, the people do not reckon upon having more than eight days' sleighing in winter. Vegetables can be raised here, which will not grow on the main land of Sweden, and in favorable seasons and situations the walnut, the mulberry, and the grape, will ripen in the open air. Wisby, the metropolis of the island, possesses much interest for the historian and the antiquarian.
