BIOGRAPHIICAL ENCYCLOPAEDIA. off by a cannon shot at the battle of Arkansas Post, he retired from the service. He was an active participant in the battles of Shiloh (or Pittsburgh Landing), Corinth, Yazoo, Vicksburg, and Arkansas Post, besides lesser engagements and skirmishes. On his return home he was appointed a Captain in the Veteran Reserve Corps, and was stationed at Cincinnati until July, I864, when he was promoted to the Colonelcy of the 43d United States, and with that regiment was in all the latter great battles around Richmond, Virginia, and for some time commanded the Ist Brigade, Ist Division, 25th Army Corps, and was soon thereafter promoted Brigadier-General by brevet. In I865 he was finally mustered out of the service, and on his return to civil life, engaged in the drug business for eighteen months. In i866 he was elected Probate Judge of Fayette county, and held the office for three years. In I870 he relired to his farm in Madison township, Fayette county, where he resided for two years, engaged in agricultural pursuits. In I872 he returned to Washington, where he was admitted to the bar, and entered upon the practice of his profession, and has since resided there, where he has established a lucrative legal business. He is a Republican in principle, and a Baptist in religious belief. He is a pleasant companion, of genial manners and extensive information, having experienced so varied a life in the last twenty-five years. Ile was married, I864, to Cordelia A., daughter of Daniel Wood, an early settler of Fayette county, Ohio. i OLONY, HON. JAMES, Lawyer, was born, Apri l an I2th, I848, in the city of Cincinnati, and is a son of the late Daniel and Sarah (Stevens) Molony. His fathe r was a native of Roscarlbery, county of NCork, Ireland, a graduate of Trinity College, Dubli n, and emigrated to America in 183o, and settled in Cincinnati. Hi s life was devoted to literary pursuits, and he fille d the Pro fessorship of Ancient and Modern Languages n Miami University, Farmer's College, oand Woodward College, Ohio, successively, for about twent y years, a nd di ed Se pte mber 9ftl, I852. His wi fe wa s a native of South Danvers, Mas sac husetts. Jame s received a liberal education at Farmer's College, from Mwhich he graduated in I868. He then became a clerk in the Lafayette Bank of Cincinnati, and subsequently was in the employ of Cuppler & Marston, of St. Louis. He was also an agent of the Erie Railroad at Nashville, Tennessee, until I87I. He then returned to Cincinnati, where he commenced the study of law with General Bannin g, a nd in December, I873, was admitted to practise at the bar, and has sinc e given hi s attention to professional duties in Cincinnati, where he resides. I-Ie was Deputy Sheriff of Hamilton county for two years under George W. Wiegler. In I873 he was nominated on the first ballot as a candidate on the People's ticket for the Legislature, and in i875 was a candidate on the Democratic ticket for the same position, being chosen lilkewise on the first ballot by a large majority of the Hamilton County Democratic Convention. During the civil war, from I863 until its close, he was a guidon of the 5th Ohio Artillery, and was an active participant in the great battles of the Tennessee and Southwest carnpaigns, including the siege of Vicksburg. He is of pleasing and courteous manners, has a cool and determined demeanor, and although young in years, his experience in life has been varied, and eminently adapts him for the profession he successfully pursues. ENNEDY, WILLTAM B., Merc ha nt, w as born,e Octobe r IIt h, I832, in Hamilton count y, Ohio, t o f Am erican parentage; his family were among the earliest settlers of O hio, a great-gr andfather bein g o ne e i ne er of the pioneers of the State. He re ceiv ed a li b eral education in Farmer's College, Hamilton county, where he remained until nineteen years of age, a nd then engaged in t eaching. He subsequently retu oned t o the farm, continuing there until he was appointed, in I854, a clerk in the County Auditor's office, ho lding that position for five years. In 1859 he engaged in the man ufacture of a patent match, which he continued until I86I, when, in consequence of the civil war, his principal trade being with the South, he relinquished it. He was subsequently employed in a clerical capacity with one of the leading mercantile houses of the city until I867, when he established the firm of W. B. Kennedy & Co., and engaged in the merchandise commission business, in which he has since,continued. He is a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity, also of the Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias. In the order of Odd Fellows he was, from I866 to I869 inclusive, a representative to the Grand Lodge of Ohio; and a representative to the Grand Encampment from I867 to I87O and I872 to I875, in all eight years, over which latter body he now presides as Most Worthy Grand Patriarch. He was a charter member of the Grand Lodge 1ARFIEI UDE, SAMUEL, Banker, wa s born, January i lll I6th, I8o8, in Baltimore, Maryland, and is a son of the late John and Elizabeth (Speies) Marfield, (~.~ both of whom were natives of Germany. His father was a merchant, and came to America when young and settled in Baltimore, where he resided until his death. Samuel received a liberal education, and when sixteen years old was apprenticed to the saddlery trade, which he thoroughly learned in six years. He then engaged in business on his own account, as an 648 of the Knihts of P thias of Ohio, supreme representative from Ohio to the Supreme Lodge of the World, I S70 to IS72, both inclusive, and was elected an officer (S. G.) of the latter body, and served in I873 and 1874. so so
