BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPAEDIA. continued business uninterruptedly until November, I872, when he went with his family to New York, where he spent the winter in the medical colleges and hospitals, re ceivinlg a diploma from Bellevue Hospital Medical College, and certificates of private instruction from several eminent ' physicians of that city. Leaving New York in March, I873, the balance of the year was spent in travelling over the Western States and Territories, including the Gulf States, California, Oregon, Washington Territory, and a part of British Columbia, with the view of studying the prev alent diseases, and the influence of climate on the same. Returning to Ohio in December, I873, he located in Colum bus, where he still resides and is rapidly gaining public esteem and favor, and building himself up a good practice. He was married to Mary E. Brown, October 27th, I864. ~OD, HON. GEORGE, Lawyer and Jurist, was ~)I 1iborn, December i Ith, I773, at Suffield, Itartford o-~j[county, Connecticut. He graduated at Yale Col lege in I795, and having selected the law as his c C. DD profession, pursued his studies at the celebrated law school at Fapping Reeve, Litchfield county, and was admitted to the bar in October, I797. He commenced the practice of his profession in New Haven, where he remained a few years. In I8oo he removed to Youngstown, Trumbull county, Ohio, and in August of the same year was appointed the Prosecuting Attorney of that county. In I8SIo he sent for his family to join him. He was elected in I804 a Senator in the State Legislature from Trumbull coutnty, and at the close of his term in that body was appointed, in I8o6, a Judge of the Supreme Court, to fill a vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Jonathan Meigs. In I8Io he was again elected to the Senate from Truml)ull county. When war was declared by Congress against Great Britain, he accepted a commission of Major in the regular army from President Madison, and, March I3th, I814, was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel of the I7th Regiment United States Infantry. In the winter of I8I5 he was appointed President Judge of the Third Circuit of Ohio, which office he held until I830. In the autumn of the same year he was elected Prosecuting Attorney, which was the last office he held. He was one of the most eminent lawyers and advocates of his time. IHe was married, prior to his removal to Ohio, to Sally Isaacs. He died at Briar Hill, April I Ith, I841, leaving a widow and five children, RION, JOHN, Far mer and Mer c hant, was born, Se ptember 6th, I7.98, in Ka nawha county, (no w We st) Virgini a, a nd is the oldes t son of Robert and Nancy (Balentine) Irion. His father was a f na tive of-So uth Car ol ina, who was a farmer by oc cupation and a su rveyor by profession. He remove d to Ohio in I802, and first settled i n Brown county, whe re he res ided about twelve years, and proceeded, in I8 S 14, to Fayette county, where he sojourned until his death. lie was an active participant in the early Indian wars of Virginia, and m sarr ie d there Nancy, daughter of Thomas Balentiiie, both of whom were natives of the north of Ireland, but emigrated to America, and were among the early settlers of what is now the State of West Virginia. John is the eldest of a family of thirteen children. He worked on a farm when a boy, and attended the district school during the winter season. When twenty-two years of age, he began life on his own resources, as a farmer in Fayette county, and has resided in that section ever since, with the exception of some five years passed in Brown county. He has been through his long life principally engaged in agricultural pursuits. He filled the office of Justice of the Peace of Union township, Fayette county, for a considerable period; and was also Land Appraiser of the same locality for one year. He was a Captain under the old militia law of the State. He was at one time interested in the stock of the Panhandle Railroad, and also ill several turnpike companies. At present he is a stockholder in the Dayton & Southeastern Railroad Company. He has recently embarked in the boot and shoe business, under the firm-name of Irion & Co., himself owning the controlling interest. His political views are those held by the Republican party, having previously been a Whig of the Henry Clay school, His religious belief is not circumscribed by the doctrines of any particular church. Socially he is of pleasant and courteous manners. He has always led a temperate life, and, though he has nearly reached the age of fourscore ON BONItORST, CHARLES G., Dentist, was H born, March 3d, 1820, in the city of P i ttsburgh, Pennsylvania, alnd is a son of Baron Charles F. Von Bonhorst, a lawyer, and one of the oldest and most prominent citizens, who was born in B erlin, Prussia, fought ag ai n st the fistt Nap oleon, and emigrated to America in I8o8, and inarried a lady, a native of Washington county, Pennsylvania. Charles, the younger, attended a private school in Pittsburgh, and had completed an academic course, when fourteen years of age. He commenced to play the violin in the theatrical orchestra when fifteen, continuing until he had attained his majority, in the meantime studying dentistry, paying for his instruction in 583 years, his mental and physical faculties are wonderfully preserved. He has always been noted for untiring energy and industry, and has been the architect of his own fortunes, having amassed an ample competence. He was married in I820 to Catharine, daughter of John Hawkes, an early pioneer of Brown county, Ohio. She died in i875, having had fifteen children. .o. -o: so
