BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOP,EDIA. family residence. Here, after a life of usefulness and honor, Dr. Isaac Swift passed away on the evening of Tuesday, July I4th, 1874, having reached his eighty-fifth year with unimpaired faculties. He was a pioneer of whomot Portage county is justly proud(l. Dr. Swift is survived by his aged wife and three children, viz.: Dr. Charles E. Swift, of Ashtabula, Ohio; Mrs. E. R. Wait, of Ravenna; and Mrs. Emily Morrison, of New York city. The late Governor Henry A. Swift, of Minnesota, was a son of the subject of this memoir. A native of Ravenna, where he was born, March 23d, I823, Henry A. graduated at the Western Reserve College, read law, became clerk of the Ohio Hlouse of Representatives, was a member of the Minnesota Legislature, one of the defenders of St. Peter, Minnesota, in the Indlian massacre of 1862, and filled the chair of the Chief Executive of the commronwl-ealth of MilEnesota. He died February 26th, 1869. , ~ ONES, WILLIAML FRANCIS, Boot and Shoe maker, was born, August I2th, I824, inl Nash M county, North Carolina, of American parentage. W'hen but five years of age hle was indentured to learn the trade of a shoemaker, and worked until he attained his majority. lie then commenced business for himself, his cash caplital being fifty cents, and his to ol s consisting only of a hammier, a pair of pincers, a peg awl, a sewing awl, and a knife. From this small beginning he has prospered and gained a comfortable livelihood, beside having laid by a store for the "rainy day." In I858 he removed to Cleveland, where he has ever since resided. During the war of the rebellion he served one year and was honorably discharged. He has always been Republican in political feeling, but has never held a public office of any kind. In religious belief he is a Methodist. He was converted at the age of twelnty-four, and up to that time had never heard a sermon preached. Soon after his arrival in Cleveland he engaged earnestly in the cause of religion, and ",as a zealous laborer in the field before him, insomuch that the church asked for his promotion. Ile was accordingly ordained a Deacon by the Annual Conference, at Columbus, April 3oth, i868. He was married, May 22d, I847, to Malindia Mayo, of North Caroilina. e~ OODWARD, CHARI,ES, M. D., Physician, was born, i8o4, in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsyl vania. After receiving a thorough classical and caca(lemical education, he entered the College of New Jersey, at Princeton, and graduated from that institution il the class of I823, receiving the degree of A. B. Ilavi ng selected the medical profession for his future career, he became a student in the Philadelphia Medical Institute, and in I826 received the degree of M. D. from that institution. Almost immediately after graduation he removed to Cincinnati, and commenced the practice of medicine in that city, which he only relinquished early in I874, owing to impaired health. It is a very remarkable fact that he never lost a day of active service in his profession, by reason of ill health, until attacked by the disease of which he died. Wonderful buoyance of feeling, great energy, constant endurance in a very large practice, were doulbtless the results of such extraordinary health. HIe was in rather straitened circumstances when he first entered his profession. A speculative venture resulting successfuLlly gave him means to equip his office, get marr-ied, and abide the time of his success. Prosperity soon followed skilful efforts in his work, and he acquired enviable dclistin ction for family practice. He was especially noted for a keenly sympathetic, gentle nature, that made him a most acceptalble visitor to the sick-chamber. His patrois became attached to him with something akin to filial or fraternal love. They had comfort in his soothing manner, faith in his skill, and confidence il his ever gentlemanly bearing. A singular fact in his professional career was his steadfastly declining to take a professorship in colleges. He also avoided successfully the quarrels, jealousies, and strange diiffer-ences into which members of the profession are so prone to fall. While habitually courteous and friendly, he was unvaryingly dignified and polite. His near a half 526 century of work in his profession brought him a f,-'ir competeiicy; not so directly from his earnings-wbich alone will male a conscientious and faithful physician i-ich-])ut much of what he gathered together resulted from a habit be steadily adhered to of buying real estate whenever his accumulations warranted an investment. Flis NN,,-,rmly sympathetic disposition made him generous not only in iviiig, but also in a charity practice, a large amount of attention having been given the poor without charge. I-le was niai-ried, 1828, to Amelia Roe, sister of the late Charles Roe and of Mrs. Josiah Lawrence, and there were born to him six sons all'd two daughters, all of whom survive him. 1-le died iii Ciiiciiinati, August i6th, IS-74.
