BIOGRAPhICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA. drowned on the steamer "Pat Rogers," August 5th, I1874, and was buried on his twenty-first birthday, August 8th, 1874. He was possessed of a lovely character, of pleasing personal presence, and eagerly sought for in all social and musical gatherings; his gay and buoyant spirits were tempered with an unfailing courtesy that always made him a welcome and favorite guest. He gave bright promise as a musician, and very few can fill his place in the Harmonic Society. regiment he entered the service, and remained with them until Nove-ber, I862, when he r esi gned on account of sickness, and returned home. In January, I863, he enter ed the Ohio Upt ion Law College at Cl evela nd, from which institution he gradu ated in June of the sam e y ear. Immediately after his graduation he was admitted as an at torney in the United States Court for the Northern District of Ohio. In t ut 84 the month of May of the following year hlie was admitted on the application of the Hoin. Morrison R. Waite, in the District Court of Toledo, to pr actise law in the State of Ohio. On the I6th of March, I864, he conimenced t he practice of his profession at Wause on, Fulton county, Ohio, and from that time to the present he has continued to reside there, in active practice. His success from the first has been very great, and h e speedily attained a large and growing p ractic e. His natural abilities and his high professional attainments have won f or him the c onfi - dence of all, and he now occupie s a leadi ng position in h is profession, and his services are c onsta ntly in dem and. In politics he is a Republican,lbut his con stant professional occupation has precluded much active participation on his part in political affairs. He has held no public office except that of Mayor of Wauseon, to which position bhewas elected in the spring of I874 over the Prohibition candidate. In person he is of medium height, and has a pleasant and agreeable face. His manner is eminently courteous and prepossessing and he is as popular socially as he is professiolially. He was married on the 2d of November, Io67, to Minnie L. Ayers, of Burlington, Iowa. ELANO, LINCOLN GOODALE, was b or n at m Columb us, O hio, November iloth, I828. His d father, Har ry Delano, was born in Ohio, and was A en gaged in the mercantile bu sines s at C olumbus, Ohio, f rom 1814 until r84I, the timne of his death., His mother was Sar a h Denny, daughter of Gene ral James Denny, of Pickaway county, Ohio. Lincoln Goodale Delano attended schools at Columbus, Ohio, until I840; he was at that time placed under the instruction of the Rev. E. Washburn, of the Blendon Institute, in Franklin county, Ohio. During the year I843 he entered the mercantile business and remained in it until I846, when he adopted the profession of Civil Engineer. He was at Kenyon College during the year I85I, but continued in the business of Civil Engineer until r855, when he engaged in driving cattle from Texas to the Chicago and New York markets. Ilie has followedl the cattle business and agricuilural pursuits up to the present time. From I870 to I876 he was a member of the Ohio State Board of Agriculture, and President of the Board for the years I873 and I874. Governor Allen appointed him one of the Board of Commissioners for the construction of the Central Ohio Hospital for Insane in I874, and to the same position in I875; he resigned the commission in I876 to accept the office of Commissioner of Railroads and Telegraphs, tendered him by Governor Allen. He was married, January I5th, 186I, to Martha Crouse, daughter of Honi. John Crouse, of Ross county, Ohio. cMILLAN, URIAH G., Physician and Druggist, was born in York county, Pennsylvania, January 29th, I826, being the son of Enos McMillan, a farmer, who was a native of the same locality. ,'~' Q His mother, whose maiden name was Sarah Wright, was born in the same State. III I837 he went with his parents to Columbiana county, Ohio, where his father afterwards cultivated a farm and ran a mill. The education of Dr. McMillan was begun in this section. His summers were employed in assisting his father, and his winters in study at school. In I844 he entered the high school at New Lisbon, defraying the expenses of his support and tuition by working during his leisure hours. In I846, having obtained a tolerably comprehensive knowledge of those branches of study mainly needed in business life, and of others, the usefulness of which by many at that time was regarded as visionary, he started on a novel undertaking. In company with James W. Marshall, he went about to teach the philosophy of electricity, having obtained an apparatus with which to illustrate his lectur es. In this line he was very successful, and was able to meet all the obligations which he incurred while a student. In the fall of the same 'ELLY, WILLIAM CLAY, Lawyer, was born on v a|; the 24th of March, 1840, in Liberty township, Hancock county, Ohio, of Irish ancestry. He received his education at Findley High School, ~; in his native county, and on leaving school in March, I855, he commenced at once to teach. From that time until I86I the greater part of his time was spent in teaching. In the month of December, I859, he commenced reading law with Hon. Henry Brown, of Finalley, and continued reading with him until the 23d of July, 1862. Then he dropped his professional studies for the time, and in connection with Captain Pope and Lieutenant Hursh, of Findley, he commenced recruiting Company D of the ggth Ohio Infantry.
