Letters of Lydia Maria Child, with a biographical introduction by John G. Whittier and an appendix by Wendell Phillips.

LETTERS. 27 iif.t, wittiiv proposed that a "committee be apV.,'>int, t-to exanine the foundations of the State JIouzti of Ml[assachusetts, to see whether it will bear aUlother tlecture from MIiss Grimke."'One sign that her influence is felt is that the "sound part of the community" (as they consider thet-selves) seek to give vent to their vexation by CiA.1)ig lelr Devil-ina instead of Angel-ina, and MAiss G-iinal-ikn instead of Miss Grimke. Another sign is that. we have succeeded in obtaining the Odeon, one of the ltargest and nmost central halls, for her to speak in;:and it is the first tinie such a place has been obtninrd for anti-slavery in this city. Antreli na and Sarah have been spending the winter 3t the house of MAr. P.- -, about five rfiles from here. The familty were formerly of the Society of F:rietIds -- are now, I believe, a little Swedenborgian, ubtt llOtre Q2uasIer,;and swinging loose from any regni;lar. critety jsLit as I and so ilmany hundred others'e doin,, t thre p~resent day. I shoult like earnestly andt trtiy Iel,' beit-e with somne large sect, because retitou.i synmpathv is so delightful; but I now think thl:t if I,,ere to live nmy life over again I sIhould not oIutwardly join any society, there is such a ten(IdncP to spiritllal do;ination, such an interferino with intividall freedom. I{fa ve you read a little pamphlet called " George Fox and his First Disciples"? I was charmed with it Don't you renmellber I told you I was sure that the M/nott and M*hee of Friends originated in a principle oi Christian equality? This pamphlet confirms my nie11-Itlre. In the English language of George Fox's fi.mt, and in most European languages now, thou wasa used only to familiars and ecquals.
