SMITH WOODS SMITH, George Watson, manufacturer, b. in Clinton Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, 18 December, 1862, son of Joseph Schrum and Mary Ann (Watson) Smith. His earliest American ancestor was his greatgrandfather, George Smith, born in Germany about 1750, who came to America in 1764, served in the Revolutionary War for four years, and in 1780 married a daughter of John Wonderlay, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Mr. Smith's mother, Mary Ann Watson, was a descendant of John Davis who came from Scotland, and settled near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1768, and later removed to Butler County, Pennsylvania. Through her father she was a descendant of Thomas Watson, a native of County Down, Ireland, who settled in Butler County in 1770. Her grandfather, James Watson, born in Ireland in 1759, served in the Revolutionary Army, was taken prisoner at the Battle of Brandywine, and was kept on a British prison ship for three months. He served under Lieutenant Colonel Bicker in Captain McGowan's Company, having enlisted from Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He died in Butler County, Pennsylvania in 1845. George Watson Smith entered upon his business career in 1883, and eventually became president of the Sterling Steel Foundry Company, and of the Safe Deposit Bank. For nine years he was a school director and for four years a councilman of Tarentum Borough. In 1884 Mr. Smith married Ida May, daughter of John Nease, a farmer, of Clinton Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania. They had five children: Mary Annette, Harry Floyd, Everett Porter, George Clarence, and Olive May Smith. SPAULDING, Huntley Norvel, manufacturer, b. at Townsend Harbor, Massachusetts, 30 October, 1869, son of Jonas and Emeline (Cummings) Spaulding. His father (1833 -1900) was the founder of Jonas Spaulding and Sons Company, manufacturers of leatherboard specialties, with factories at Rochester, North Rochester and Milton, New Hampshire; Townsend Harbor, Massachusetts; Tonawanda, New York; and London, England. Mr. Spaulding was educated in the elementary schools of Lawrence, Massachusetts; at the Lawrence Academy, Groton, Massachusetts; completed the course at Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, in 1889; and the next year began his business career at Townsend Harbor, Massachusetts. He is President of the International Leather Company of Boston, and of the Atlas Leather Company of Caseyville, Illinois; Treasurer of the Spaulding Fibre Company, Inc., of Rochester, New Hampshire, and of the Jonas Spaulding and Sons Company; and is Vice-President of the Spaulding and Frost Company of Fremont, New Hampshire. On 14 August, 1917, he was appointed Federal Food Adiministrator for New Hampshire for the duration of the World War. He was Chairman of the New Hampshire Board of Education; received the honorary degree of Doctor of Science from the New Hampshire State College, Durham, New Hampshire, in 1918, and, in 1920, was a candidate for election to the United States Senate from the State of New Hampshire. WOODS, John Carter Brown, lawyer, b. Providence, Rhode Island, 12 June, 1851, son of Marshall and Anne Brown (Francis) Woods. He descends from Samuel and Abel Woods of Princeton, Massachusetts, and Alva Woods of Providence, Rhode Island; also from John Marshall of England, and Billerica, M assachusetts, two other successhall of Billerica, Josiah Marshall o f Boston, and Almira (Marshall) Woods of Providence, Rhode Island. Through his I motoher he descends from Philip Francis of Plymouth, England, John Francis of Leighlin, Ireland, John Francis of Lismore, Ireland, Tench Francis of Ireland, Maryland and Pennsylvania, Tench Francis of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, John Francis of Providence, Rhode Island, and John Brown Francis of Warwick, Rhode Island; also from John Carter of Ireland and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, John Carter of Providence, Rhode Island, and Ann (Carter) Brown of Providence, Rhode Island; also from Chad Browne of England and Providence, Rhode Island, Nicholas and John Brown, brothers, of Providence, Rhode Island, Nicholas Brown, (Brown University) of Providence, Rhode Island, and Anne Carter (Brown) Francis of Providence, Rhode Island. He received his early education in the private school of the Reverend Charles H. Wheeler in Providence, Rhode Island; entered Brown University, and was graduated in the class of 1872, with the degree of A.B., delivering the classical oration. In 1875 he received the degree of A.M. Choosing the study of law he was graduated at Harvard Law School, receiving the degree of LL.B. in 1874. The same year he was admitted to the Rhode Island bar, and in 1876 to the Federal Courts. In addition to his professional duties he carries many business responsibilities, and from 1886 to 1920 was a director of the Providence National Bank. From 1877 Mr. Woods occupied prominent political positions in City and state. His first appearance in public life was as a member of the Providence Common Council, an office to which he was elected 30 January, 1877. He was continued in the Council through successive re-elections until January, 1885, when he declined to accept the 'honor again. He was President of the Council during the years 1881, 1882, 1883, 1884 and served on important regular, special, and joint committees.
