[Pamphlets. American history]

223 extraordinary' Expense beyond manlly states in furnishing heads and hands to perform Congress Drudogery, and her members have more of the Work of stanclin Boards & Commi-ittees than most others, because their Residence has been more usually permallent; This has exposed her to lose a Vote when she has made numbers necessary to give it. One of her Delegates may often render tenfold Service on the Board or Cornl.tee of which he is a member by servinl aii entire clday o it than by being in Congress merely as a macke-vote. You well know these things by y7our past Sufferinos, and1I M.r Gerry has felt them at the Peril of his Life. Whatever may have been the Intention of a remarkable Variety in the Course of 4 years respecting the Voice of -Mass: here, I do believe that in the present Case the Words do not speak the Intenltiohs of the Movers of the Resolve. I am so persuladed of that, as to determine not to present the latter Vote to Congress with tlle 1proceedin s of Oct. 4, more especially if one of us here shall be unwell;-till I hear more fromn you. I am almost deterlmined( not to write any more to yon for either my Letters must be quite insignificant or I must tell Tales to the Enemy. 10 or 11 of those I wrote Nov.r 20 & 21 are goone into N. Yk. Among themn those to M.r Gerry (inclosingl one I think firon mI.r J. Adams), Doct.r Holten Docter Whitwell Mrs. Adams (inclosing one certainly from her Husband) Gov.r Hancock M.r S. Gridley with my Rhode Island & Fatmily Letters. I am told two mails fronm hence are layin at Fish-kill. There are some immense Genii in the Post office Dep'artment but I am told they say the Fautlts of Congress marr their Plans. y.r Friend and h. serv.t James Lovell. (Directed) Hon.ble Doctor Holten Philad.a Boston. Ja.S Lovell. (Endorsed) A letter from M.r Lovell Dec.r 1780. rec.d the 4.t11 Jan.y answer.d 11.th
