l rtbute BY WILLIAM ROUNSEVILLE ALGER, BOSTON, MASS. prized by me, began almost forty years ago with an incident characteristic of her frank and generous nature. Having read a paper of mine entitled "The Literature of Friendship," just then published in "The North American Review," she wrote me a letter expressing her enthusiastic approval of the sentiments embodied in the essay, and the delight she had experienced in its perusal. Soon after this we met in person, and at once became friends. From that hour, through the events and changes of all the ensuing years, the hearty good will and confidence uniting us have never known an interruption or a shadow, until now, alas! the undeparting shadow of her death. I have not known a more original and interesting personality.
