DEATH OF DR. BOTIA. {e DId Not Reeover Coselousaes After HIsf Fall from a Wludow. Dr. V-incenzo Botta died early yesterday morn Drg at his home, 25 diest Thirty-seventh street. He did not recover consciousness after his'fall from a third-story w.-indow of his house at 3 o'clock on Tuesday morning. It is thought that the fall was due to an attack of vertigo. He had felt the attack coming on, anl warned a rela tive, MNrs. Thomas F. Lynch, who lived with him. As he had retired feeling in good spirits he was thought to be all right for the iiight. Hisf neighbor, Dr. J. S. Boyd, Jr., of 28 West Thirty eighth street, heard Dr. Botta's fall, and, hear ing groans afterward, he summoned two polie e men. They found Dr. Botta unconscious. Mrs. Lyiich would not allow him to be taken to a hospital. Dr. Botta was more than six feet tall, and of impressive appearance. His culture and good | fellowship made hihn a valued acquaintance. l Eminent in Italy, and known at Euroliean r capitals, where he had pursued investigations of educational systems, Dr. Botta became equallv prominent here soon after his arrival in this country in 1853. He w,ias then'3.5 years old. He came to study the common school system of the United States, and liking American ways and institutions he determined to make this city his home. In two years he married Anuie Charlotte Lynch, the author, and their home became a r gathering place of the prominent people of the! country and visitors from abroad. Dr. Botta was born in Cavaller Maggiori, Piedmont. Nov. II. 1818, and received his edu cation at the University of Turin, where lie I afterward became professor of philosophy. He; was elected to the Sardinian Parliament in 1849, and in the following year he was commin.s sioned, with a fellow member, Dr. Parola, to ex amine the school system of Germany. Their re port w -s published by the Government. The .University of Berlin conferred upon Prof. Botta the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In recog nition of his work in Germany. Soon after T coming to this country he was made pro- w fessor of languages in the University orptheo City of New York, and held this place uial a few years ago. In 1863 he became a member of 'the Union League Club, and for many years fand at the time of his death he was one of its Vice-Presidents. During the Franco-Prussian war his home was the centre of a movement started by Mrs. Botta to relieve the women and children of Paris. Mrs. Botta collected the autographs of famous persons and sold the collection for $5,000. lhe war was ended before the collection was complete, so the sum was used to found a prize in the French Academy. Mrs. Botta died in Europe two years ago. Dr. Botta published several works, the best knowsm of which are "Dante as Philosopher, Patriot, and Poet," with an analysis of the " Divina Commedia;" "An Historical Account of Modern Italy," " Discourse on the Life, Character, and Policy of Cavour."
