Remtntisccncs At a time when I was suffering severe affliction, she kindly offered to render me any aid in her power, and in that connection she said that she and her hus band were expecting to sail for Europe in a few days, and suggested that the change of scene which would be afforded by such a journey would perhaps be the best relief I could find under the circumstances; that if I would take passage with them, they would with pleasure do all in their power to aid and sustain me in my dejected condition. I accepted her proposal very gratefully, and the kindness of the attentions thus afforded me can never be forgotten, or the obligation discharged. She has been kindly and beneficent by her sympathy and soothing aid to an extent that I will not attempt to describe. She was always accessible in time of need, always interested and sympathetic; but her ministrations did not end there. She had strength and the power to impart it to the depressed and suffering,- the wisdom as well as the wish which could strengthen and enliven the suffering and despondent. As advice, she adopted the words of Emerson, and gave them to me in the following lines: Some of your griefs you have cured, And the sharpest you still have survived; But what torments of pain you've endured From evils that never arrived! The following poem was addressed to me by her during my affliction: 137
