262 WASHINGTON'S WRITINGS. [ET. 50. tempt, in any manner, and at such a time, as your own judgment shall direct. I am fully persuaded, that it is unnecessary to caution you against offering insult or indignity to the persons of the Prince and Admiral, should you be so fortunate as to capture them; but it may not be amiss to press the propriety of a proper line of conduct upon the party you command. In case of success, you will, as soon as you get them to a place of safety, treat them with all possible respect; but you are to delay no time in conveying them to Congress, and reporting your proceedings with a copy of these orders. Take care not to touch upon the ground, which is agreed to be neutral, namely, from Newark to Rahway and four miles back. Given at Head-.Quarters, this 28th day of March, 1782.* TO THE GENERAL AND FIELD OFFICERS OF THE ARMY. Head-Quarters, 19 April, 1782. The Commander-in-chief submits the papers accompanying this, containing the case of Captain Joshua Huddy, lately hanged within the county of Monmouth in New Jersey State by a party of the enemy, to the consideration of the general officers of brigades and regiments, and thereupon requests from them, separately land in writing, a direct and laconic reply to the following queries. 1. Upon the state of facts in the above case, is retaliation justifiable and expedient? 2.
