When the English parliament heard of Wallace's
fighting for Philip of France, they pretended that he
had broken the peace, and that they would again invade Scotland by sea and by land, and reduce it to a
Roman province. So they sent a great army of foot
and horse, and a fleet of many sail, who in conjunction took Bothwell Castle, Saint Johnston, Dundee,
and all the country from Cheviot to the sea, plundering and murdering men, women and children, and all
the old friends of Wallace, who governed the realm
in his absence, were forced to flee and hide themselves; so the sanguinary Edward made a second
tonquest of Scotland.
