That this is a general superstition, is well known to
all who have been on ship-board, or who have conversed with seamen. The most formidable whistler
that I remember to have met with was the apparition
of a certain Mrs. Leakey, who, about 1636, resided,
we are told, at Mynehead, in Somerset, where her
only son drove a considerable trade between that port
and Waterford, and was owner of several vessels.
This old gentlewoman was of a social disposition, and
